Peawanuck Wildland Fire Program

Peawanuck is a remote fly-in community situated on the Winisk River. As Ontario’s second-most northerly First Nation, its isolation presents challenges that aƯect the response times for external aid. Historically,

Peawanuck has faced wildland fires, often necessitating the involvement of residents in response eƯorts. To improve fire safety and enhance preparedness and response capabilities, Weenusk First Nation established the Peawanuck Wildland Fire Program, a volunteer service in 2023. This initiative aims to strengthen the community’s ability to manage and respond to wildland fire risks.

Mission Statement

Peawanuck Wildland Fire is dedicated to safeguarding lives, infrastructure, and values by mitigating fire risks, performing response, and enhancing readiness to create a safer and prepared community.

Vision

We are committed to making our region safer, prepared, and resilient against wildland fires and emergencies through a collaborative approach.
