Housing Department Overview
The Weenusk First Nation Housing Department is committed to providing safe, well-maintained homes for community members in Peawanuck. Our team works to address housing maintenance and renovation needs while ensuring that the concerns of residents are heard, documented, and acted upon.
The Housing Department is made up of a Housing Officer, two General Maintenance Personnel, and six Renovation Personnel. Together, the team is responsible for coordinating housing repairs, completing general maintenance, and carrying out renovation projects throughout the community.
Housing concerns and repair requests are documented and tracked so that work can be properly prioritized, scheduled, and followed through to completion. Each morning, the Housing team meets to review the day’s workload, coordinate upcoming jobs, and discuss any issues that may affect ongoing or planned work.
The safety and well-being of our community members are our highest priorities. Repair and renovation requests are assessed according to the level of risk they may present to occupants, with urgent health and safety concerns receiving priority attention.
The Housing Department also works to keep residents informed about the status of their maintenance, repair, and renovation requests. For larger renovation projects and significant housing needs, the department communicates directly with Chief and Council to identify priorities and support efforts to secure the necessary funding.
Beyond maintaining and repairing homes, the Housing Department serves as an important connection between community members and Chief and Council. By listening to residents and communicating their housing concerns, the department helps ensure that community needs are represented in housing planning and decision-making.
Looking Ahead
As part of our commitment to improving housing services, Weenusk First Nation is planning for the development of a dedicated housing warehouse. The warehouse will maintain an organized inventory of commonly required maintenance and repair parts, helping the Housing team respond to repair requests more efficiently and reducing delays caused by unavailable materials.
Inventory will be carefully managed and replenished before supplies run out, helping ensure that essential parts are available when they are needed.
Through ongoing maintenance, renovations, careful planning, and open communication, the Housing Department will continue working toward safe, comfortable, and sustainable homes for the people of Weenusk First Nation.
