Child and Family Services

Prevention

Offers a wide range of prevention activities and services on-reserve designed to strengthen families and enhance the safety, health, and well-being of First Nations communities. These services focus on addressing the root causes and structural factors—such as poverty, trauma, inadequate housing, and limited access to supports—that contribute to the overrepresentation of First Nations children and youth in the child and family services system. By promoting early intervention, cultural connection, and family empowerment, prevention programs help ensure children grow safely within their own communities.

First Nation Representative Services

Offers advocacy, representation, and support for First Nations children and families who are involved, or at risk of becoming involved, with the child and family services system. These services ensure that families understand their rights, have access to culturally appropriate resources, and receive fair treatment throughout the process. By working closely with community members, service providers, and leadership, the program promotes family reunification, cultural continuity, and holistic well-being, helping to reduce system involvement and strengthen family connections.

Bill C92 Coordinator

An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families is federal legislation that recognizes and affirms the inherent rights and jurisdiction of Indigenous peoples over their own child and family services. The Act seeks to reduce the overrepresentation of Indigenous children in government care by prioritizing community-based solutions, keeping children connected to their families, cultures, and languages, and ensuring services reflect Indigenous values and traditions. It empowers Indigenous communities to design and deliver their own child welfare laws and systems.

Family Well-Being

The Family and Well-Being program was launched in 2016.   Offers supports, community-based programming and safe spaces for Indigenous children, youth, families and community members.

First Nation Child Care Program

Offers high-quality, free drop-in programs that support children, parents, and caregivers through engaging, play-based learning and family-centered activities. These programs create safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive spaces where families can build relationships, strengthen parenting skills, and access community resources. By promoting early childhood development and family well-being, they help children learn and thrive while giving caregivers opportunities to share experiences, gain support, and connect with others in a nurturing environment that encourages growth, learning, and community connection.

Family Violence Prevention Program

Funds a variety of culturally appropriate, community-driven activities and supports designed to prevent and address family violence on reserve. These initiatives focus on promoting safe, healthy relationships, healing, and community wellness through education, counselling, and traditional practices. Programs may include family support services, crisis intervention, awareness campaigns, and cultural healing circles that reflect Indigenous values and teachings. By empowering communities to lead their own prevention efforts, the program strengthens resilience, restores balance, and fosters long-term safety and well-being for families.
